The writer of Psalm 148 encourages all the earth and heavens to praise the Lord, including cattle and kings and mountains and fruit trees and lightning and hail in this wild cacophony of praise.

The psalmist closes with the reminder that the Lord has raised up for his people “a horn” – what? Unsure of the meaning of this odd reference, I jumped down the rabbit hole of horn research.

Turns out, “horn” as written here, refers to victory and prosperity, given from the Lord. In this case likely referring to King David, the “horn” of strength for the nation. A reminder that good things for Israel, and good things for all of us, come from the hand of the Lord.

Today, instead of grabbing the bull by the horns, or tooting my own horn, I’ll contemplate the Lord, the giver of horns, and the goodness this symbolizes.
