Cuba and the Water of Life

Dawn with a family with whom we met and gave a filter. The actual filter is small. You can see it attached to the end of blue hose, hanging on the bucket.

What do you need?

“I need a new pair of shoes,” “We need to paint our house,” “I need to get my hair colored again.”

These are all statements heard around our house in the last month and none of them are true. However, in regards to the hair – Dawn’s hair is up to her and I don’t enter into that conversation. But I have at lots of shoes in my closet and our house has older paint which is in fine condition.

What is a true need?

Our most basic needs are water, food, and shelter. Our most basic spiritual need is to know God, made known through His Son, Jesus Christ. To know Jesus is to know God.

To start the new year, we met 25 others in Havana, Cuba to give people a small, portable water filter that would provide clean water for their family. We were there with Filter of Hope, whose mission is to give safe water to those in need, plus an opportunity to understand how Jesus is the Living Water and how they can have “clean hearts” and life in Him.

We witnessed people with REAL, BASIC, and SIGNIFICANT needs. The water in Cuba is not clean. It is filled with bacteria and disease that causes diarrhea and stomach problems. Few homes have a filtration system and it costs too much for many to buy bottled water or the propane needed to boil the water. Most Cubans live on approximately $25 per month.

Dozens of teams of college students will head to Cuba and other Latin America countries over their spring breaks to work with Filter of Hope, delivering both clean water and Living Water. Please pray for them as they bring life and hope to entire families.

If you, your church, small group, or family have a desire to be involved with this type of mission trip, please visit filterofhope.org to see about going to one of the many countries where they serve.

Jesus told us, “Everyone who drinks this water will become thirsty again. But those who drink the water that I will give them will never become thirsty again. In fact, the water I will give them will become in them a spring that gushes up to eternal life.” John 4:13-14.

Innovate in 2019!

I posted this picture a year ago, and I’ll post it again. I love the way this young man is experimenting, even though we know things won’t turn out well. Why not try something new this year, even if you’re not sure of the outcome?

The world is waiting for your good, and not so good, ideas.

A Dicken’s Christmas Thought

No one is useless in this world who lightens the burden of another.

– Charles Dickens

We always remember Charles Dickens at this time of year for his story called A Christmas Carol,  with Tiny Tim and Scrooge and all the ghosts of Christmas. There is not a better ending to a story than when Scrooge awakes from his dreams and realizes that he has not missed Christmas morning! As Scrooge begins to make things right after many years of disregard for his fellow man, we see the good one person can do for another.

In Dickens’ mind our faith should move us to aid those around us, and his writing reflects this idea. The selfishness of Scrooge and Marley and their love of money dooms them to an eternity chained to their money box. How much better an eternity formed from generosity and love toward our fellow men and women? This is a simple story with profound meaning, one that continues to resonate though time. Personally, I prefer the movie version starring George C. Scott as Scrooge.

Jesus takes us to a similar place when he encourages us to “do unto others as you would have them do to you,” and to “love your neighbor as yourself.” Generosity knows no season, it never fades nor wears out. Lighten the burden of another this holiday season and you’ll be putting the words of Dickens, and Jesus, into good practice.

Give to Missions on Giving Tuesday

Dawn and I both value involving people in missions, which is one reason why I wrote the book GO, Following Jesus to the Ends of the Earth, and continue to blog. It’s also why we led a group on the Camino de Santiago this fall. We hope to involve many, many more people in this great adventure.

As “Giving Tuesday” approaches, it’s a good time to give to the causes that are close to your heart. As you evaluate your contributions, would you consider joining with us in the work we are doing around the world?

Students are interested in hearing the good news of Jesus. Check out this recent story from one of our Cru missionaries in Greece:

My teammate and I met with two Greek students the other day. We were unsure where each student was spiritually, and we honestly had no idea where the conversation would lead. God gave us an open door to use the God tools app! (this is a phone app you can download). We were able to walk the girls through Knowing God Personally in Greek. It was incredible. They had never heard or seen things expressed in such ways and it was amazing to see how big of a difference it makes when the gospel is in their language!

As you would guess, taking advantage of opportunities like this requires financial resources. Any gift you give helps us pursue our goal of putting the gospel within arm’s reach of students everywhere.

If you are so led, you can make a contribution through this link to CRU.

Thank you for considering our work and have wonderful holiday season!
