Thai Wires

On our recent trip to Thailand I came across this mass of wires in Chiang Mai. These are all primarily telecommunications (phone and internet). This style of wiring is seen all over the city. While not pretty, it’s effective. My internet worked wherever we went, a true sign of civilization these days!

Camino de Santiago 2018!

Dawn and I are excited to announce that we are again taking a group to walk the Camino de Santiago this fall, September 22-30. We would love for you to join us!

The Camino is an ancient pilgrimage across Northern Spain, walked by Christian pilgrims for over 1,000 years. In my experience it’s a “thin place” in the world, a place where it is somehow easier to gain a sense of the eternal. We will walk the last leg of the Camino, about 70 miles, in 6 days.

If you have any interest at all, please let us know. Visit the website cruadventures.com for more info. We have spots for 20 people and they will fill up quickly!

Spanish Steel

Here is my latest sword from Spain, hand-forged in Toledo. Spanish swords were considered the best in the world back in the day when swords were the weapons of choice and the best swords were made in Toledo. This one is modeled on a Moorish blade, carried by the North African Moors who conquered and ruled Spain for hundreds of years.

One of the perks of a pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago is a side trip to Toledo. Often referred to asĀ Santa Toledo, it was once the capital of Spain and seat of the Church (thus the origination of our phrase Holy Toledo!). Toledo remains a classic city to visit and one of the only places in the world to buy a hand-made sword. Which you may not realize you need, until you hold one and decide you need one, or two, or whatever.

My Favorite Travel Staples

I’ve had the privilege of traveling all over the world, and I’m leaving for a short trip again this week. Wherever I go, I take a couple things with me to eat, usually some trail mix and these Sunbelt Chocolate Chip granola bars.

Maybe it’s the “bakery-fresh taste,” but I find that there is nothing better in my backpack. You never know when you may need a snack and sometimes nothing is available, or even worse, sometimes only pressed seaweed is available. At those times, granola bars come in handy.

Add in a Coke (which can be found anywhere in the world) and I’m good to go. At least until dinner.
